Pretty tree lined slopes wind their way down the back of the resort allowing you to briefly ski across the border into Switzerland.
It is essential to have a guide when attempting this run. You can ask your resort representative to book this for you.
We always recommend that you hire a local guide to ensure your safety. These trips cost a little extra because of the distances and in the case of Courmayeur, a tunnel toll.
Courmayeur is in the Aosta Valley just on the other side of Mt-Blanc and only 20mins drive away through the Mt-Blanc tunnel. It has an excellent ski area for all abilities, and just as important there is a great restaurant called "La Maison Vielle," which serves the most delicious Italian food. Les Contamines is a large snow bowl of a ski area about 35 minutes drive from Les Houches, another great day out although the food is not quite as good as in Italy!
This is a great day out for beginners, mixed ability skiers and family groups, miles and miles of tree lined blue and red pistes, with plenty of green runs for beginners and more nervous skiers and boarders.
It has a great selection of mountain restaurants. At one end of the village, the departure point for the main Prarion Lift you will find the Marmotte Restaurant and Bar serving local specialities, a card and gift shop, a small convenience store where you can buy fresh bread, beer and other essentials and Battendier Sports, one of our partner ski hire shops where you can also store your hire skis for the day or week.
If you have your own equipment there are ski lockers at the Prarion lift. The Bellevue area is a minute walk from the Prarion where you will find the Bellevue Cable Car and just up the road, Cyprien Sports our long standing partner ski hire shop.
You can also buy clothes, sunglasses and all sorts of mountain equipment here. The 'Basilic' restaurant offers a varied menu including local specialities while next door at the 'Pull Up' bar you can try flavoured rums and treat everyone to your favourite Karaoke classics! In the Centre of the village, another minute walk up the road where the Tourist Office is, you will find 'Shopi' an excellent supermarket that sells everything you could possibly need including lovely bread, fresh meat, cheeses and a delicatessen.
If you just want a quick snack or simple mountain food the Chavanne Hotel Bar which is often packed with locals does fondues, omelettes, steak and chips, salads etc. The lifts are not covered by the ordinary valley pass. Ski highlights for all levels Beginners: Chamonix is not the ideal choice for beginners, but there are adequate nursery slopes and if there was ever a place to get bitten by the bug, this is it.
Intermediates: the Balme area is wonderful, and Les Houches has masses of cruising. There are plenty of suitable runs at all of the other areas. Experts: steep, deep, wild.
It's all here — and lots of ski touring possibilities, too. There are a number of excellent rival schools, including Evolution 2 00 33 55 90 22 and All Mountain Performance 00 33 63 05 Ecorider 6 36 66 48 10 is the first school to carry out a carbon-impact assessment and it offers free ski testing with Dynastar skis.
All schools now offer specialist courses, such as off-piste, glacier, carving and ski touring. But each season brings improvements and you can miss the lines if you get up early — or have a long lie-in.
